The Adidas Finale has featured a star design in a variety of colors since its introduction in 2001

End of an Era: Starball Out as Nike Takes Over Champions League

It’s the end of an era and honestly, it hurts a little.

After more than two decades of pure football nostalgia, Adidas is officially losing its grip on the Champions League match ball. From 2027 onwards, Nike is stepping in as the new supplier, locking in a deal with UEFA that runs until 2031. And yeah… that means the iconic starball is going away.

Let that sink in.

Since 2001, that star-covered ball hasn’t just been equipment it’s been a symbol. Nights under the floodlights, that anthem ringing out, and the moment the ball rolls… it meant something. Finals, comebacks, last-minute screamers it was always that ball. And now, the final time we’ll ever see it in action will be the 2027 Champions League final at Estadio Metropolitano.

Nike isn’t new to this they handled the ball back in the late ‘90s but let’s be real, this time feels different. They’ve reportedly doubled UEFA’s current deal to around $45 million a year and secured not just the Champions League, but also the Europa and Conference League balls. This is a full takeover.

Still, money aside, fans aren’t thinking about contracts they’re thinking about identity.

Because the starball wasn’t just design. It was Champions League energy. You could spot it in a second and feel the weight of the competition. That visual is gone now, locked behind Adidas’ design rights.

So yeah, new ball, new era. Maybe Nike delivers something fresh, something bold. But replacing something this iconic?
