Cristiano Ronaldo does not deserve blame for wanting to play every minute for Portugal but players of his stature have a duty to recognise their star has diminished.

Let Go, Ronaldo

As a lifelong football fan, saying this hurts more than most people can imagine: Cristiano Ronaldo should no longer be a starter for Portugal.

This isn’t about disrespect. It’s about reality.

Ronaldo gave Portugal everything. He turned a small football nation into a global powerhouse. He carried us through impossible moments, inspired an entire generation, and delivered the greatest night in Portuguese football history when we won Euro 2016. For many fans, he isn’t just a player he is Portugal.

But football has always been ruthless. It doesn’t care about past achievements.

Against DR Congo, Ronaldo spent 90 minutes on the pitch yet barely influenced the game. The sharp movement, explosive acceleration, and relentless hunger that once terrified defenders are no longer there. Portugal now have a golden generation filled with stars like Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, and Rafael Leão. The team has evolved, but Ronaldo’s role has not.

The biggest problem isn’t Ronaldo wanting to play. Every great champion wants to be on the pitch. The real problem is that nobody around him seems willing to tell him the truth.

The greatest players know when to adapt. They understand that putting the team first is the final test of greatness. Ronaldo can still help Portugal enormously with his experience, leadership, and winning mentality. But that impact may be greater from the bench than from the starting lineup.

What makes this situation so painful is that we’re talking about one of the greatest footballers ever, a man who conquered England, Spain, Italy, and international football. Yet every extra game where he struggles to influence play risks changing how the final chapter of his story is remembered.

Will Ronaldo’s legacy disappear? Never.

But legends aren’t remembered only for how they rise. They’re remembered for how they leave.

The football world already knows Cristiano Ronaldo is immortal. Now he has one final challenge: accepting that even the greatest cannot defeat time.
