Amorim says Manchester United face ‘really clear’ relegation threat

After losing 2-0 to Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday, Ruben Amorim said Manchester United need a “shock” and are being driven into relegation.

At halfway through the Premier League season, United is 14th with 22 points, seven above the drop zone. After first-half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton, United dropped their fourth straight match in all competitions and their first three successive home league matches since 1978-79.

“Our club needs a shock and we must understand that,” Amorim added. That’s why I mention relegation. The possibility is evident; we must fight. We must face this honestly and battle in the next game. It is one of Manchester United’s toughest moments.

The next game is a tough trip to league leaders Liverpool on Sunday. The worst United manager in 103 years, Amorim has lost five of his first eight league matches, but unless substantial deals are made next month, he will have little money to reinforce.

“We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take sell some players,” Amorim added. “You know the situation better than me. My arrival does not allow me to spend money replacing the team.”

Amorim inherited a team unsuited for his 3-4-3 shape. What prompted the head coach to implement it before the close season? “When you have a change of coach, especially in this type of club, they were not winning,” he remarked. They use the system they were bought for and lose. Will I switch to that system? Already in peril, this team.”

Marcus Rashford returned to the match squad but was a substitute. Amorim was asked why. The squad and Marcus are on my mind. I want to win the game, he remarked.
