Raphael Varane

Former France and Madrid defender Raphael Varane retires

Raphael Varane, 31, has confirmed his retirement from football. Former France centre-back took the decision following a catastrophic knee injury at Como in Serie A.

After leaving United at the end of last season, the player joined the newly promoted team on a two-year contract, although he injured his knee on his Coppa Italia debut against Sampdoria.

The France international was sidelined for the league season in August, and his injury has ended his distinguished career.

“In my career, I’ve overcome many obstacles, most of which were impossible. Reflecting on these moments, I am announcing my retirement from the game we all love with enormous satisfaction and fulfilment,” he said on Como’s official X account.

I value myself highly and want to finish strong, not just stay in the game. Following your gut requires courage. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, but now is the time to retire with a trophy at Wembley in my final game.”

Varane won four Champions Leagues and three La Liga crowns at Real Madrid in 480 club appearances over 14 years. His last trophy was the FA Cup with Manchester United.

The 2018 World Cup winner was capped 93 times for France. His coaching role at Como is set to continue.

“I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for,” he said.

From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and national team action. I loved every minute of the adventure and defended every badge.

I’ll stay with Como. Without my boots and shin pads. Something I’m excited to discuss. I would want to thank the supporters of all my clubs, my teammates, coaches, and staff for making this journey more special than I could have imagined. Thank you, football.
