In what could be one of the most jaw-dropping moves of the summer, Los Angeles FC are seriously pushing to sign Tottenham’s iconic captain, Son Heung-min. The 33-year-old forward, a living legend at Spurs with 173 goals in 454 appearances, could soon be lighting up MLS under the California sun.
LAFC, who brought in Hugo Lloris from Tottenham just last December, have had their eyes on Son for quite some time. While no formal bid has been made yet, Tottenham are bracing for LAFC to make their move. Notably, there’s zero interest from Saudi clubs right now despite earlier speculation.
With just one year left on his contract, Son’s future in North London is hanging by a thread. Spurs’ new boss, Thomas Frank, hasn’t committed to keeping him and is even undecided about continuing with Son as captain. The South Korean star did lead the side briefly in a pre-season win over Reading, but he looked off the pace.
Tottenham’s wide attacking options are overflowing after signing Mohammed Kudus and locking in Mathys Tel permanently. Add to that Brennan Johnson, Kulusevski, Manor Solomon, Wilson Odobert, and teenage sensation Mikey Moore and suddenly, Son doesn’t look as undroppable as he once did.
Spurs fans will still get to see their hero in action soon, as he travels with the squad for friendlies in Hong Kong and his hometown of Seoul, where the atmosphere is expected to be electric when Spurs face Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Spurs are stuck in tense negotiations with Nottingham Forest for £60m-rated Morgan Gibbs-White. The saga’s been complicated further by claims of an illegal approach just another layer of drama in this transfer window.
And over in the MLS, things are heating up too with big names like Messi and Alba making headlines for not showing up to the All-Star game, triggering possible suspensions (Messi & Alba Skip MLS All-Star Game – Suspensions Incoming).
If LAFC do land Son, it won’t just be a transfer it’ll be a statement. A player of his calibre, experience, and global appeal could redefine the landscape of MLS. Watch this space.
