Alexander Isak is helped off the field by Liverpool’s medical staff

Liverpool fear Alexander Isak could be sidelined for months

Liverpool are worried that their record signing Alexander Isak may have fractured his left leg after a heavy challenge in Saturday’s Premier League win over Tottenham.

The 26-year-old striker was injured while scoring Liverpool’s opening goal against Spurs. He had only just come on as a half-time substitute when Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven slid into him as Isak planted his foot. Isak left the pitch in visible pain, and the club is now waiting for MRI scan results.

After the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admitted the injury looked serious, saying it was “not a good thing,” but added that the club would wait for medical confirmation.

The injury is another setback in a difficult first season at Anfield for the Sweden international, who missed pre-season following his move from Newcastle and has already struggled with a groin problem.

Just as his partnership with Florian Wirtz appeared to be improving, this injury struck.

Isak’s possible long absence creates problems for Liverpool’s attack. Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo is still recovering from a muscle injury.

That leaves Hugo Ekitiké and Federico Chiesa as the only senior forward options, with young striker Jayden Danns also injured.

Liverpool are now reportedly pushing to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in January, with competition from Manchester City and Manchester United, though the player is believed to prefer a move to Anfield.
