The Arsenal sporting director Edu, is leaving the club and may join Evangelos Marinakis network of teams.
The surprising resignation of Edu will conclude five years in Arsenal’s senior management and cost Mikel Arteta a key ally. Arsenal will need to adjust when the Brazilian leaves due to their close bond. His departure date is unknown.
Arsenal have challenged for the title since their former midfielder returned in July 2019 as technical director.
He was instrumental in Arteta’s entrance five months later and gained power after their football director, Raul Sanllehi, left in August 2020.
After some early struggles, Edu has been instrumental in bringing in players like Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice to improve Arsenal’s team.

The absence of backups for Odegaard or Bukayo Saka and ambiguity about their center-forward position have caused problems in recent windows, but there is no evidence that this is the reason for Edu’s departure.
His friendships with Arsenal executives go beyond Arteta. Arsenal are sixth in the Premier League following a lackluster start to the season due to injuries. They have rarely rediscovered their Arteta-era prowess.
Edu is being considered for a senior role in Marinakis group, possibly in recruitment. The 57-year-old manages Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave.
After retiring, Edu was Corinthians’ director of football and Brazil’s national team coordinator before joining Arsenal.
Despite his lack of experience in European football administration, the 46-year-old is ready to take on a new challenge working for the ambitious and controversial Marinakis, whose Forest team has been the season’s surprise package and is third in the top flight.
