Fans were left angry by England’s dismal 0-0 draw against Slovenia, despite the squad leading Group C. In the Germany-based game, Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak was hardly tested as England dominated possession but was unable to generate many opportunities.
Feeling that the team and manager Gareth Southgate failed, supporters let out boos at halftime and at the end whistle. After the game, Southgate greeted the supporters to the sound of boos and cup-throwing.
England finished top of the group despite the disappointment since Denmark and Serbia drew. In the final 16, they could have to play a third-place finisher from the Netherlands, Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, or Ukraine.
Positives included great defense, excellent work from Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka as well as substitutes Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer. But England’s poor final third performance upset both the team and the supporters, who are hoping that knockout football will produce better outcomes.
