Virgil van Dijk describes new Liverpool deal progress

Virgil van Dijk has stated that negotiations for a new deal at Liverpool are underway, with hopes of extending his spectacular Anfield career.

The Liverpool captain is one of three significant assets out of contract at the end of the season, along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have yet to sign an extension despite months of talks.

All three are free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club, and Real Madrid has lined up a move for Alexander-Arnold.

Van Dijk and Salah have made it obvious that they want to continue with Liverpool, and the Netherlands international, who declared last month that he had “no idea” whether he would be at the club next season, has provided a more positive update.

Following Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Fulham on Sunday, the 33-year-old said: “There is progress, yes.” When asked if this meant he would sign an extension, Van Dijk responded, “I don’t know, we’ll see.”

The defender stated, “Listen, these are internal discussions, and we’ll see.” I adore the club and the fans, and they were there for us again [at Craven Cottage]. We wanted to reward them, but I beg that they return on Sunday [against West Ham] and make the stadium a great environment for us as it always is.”
