Ruben Amorim has hailed Harry Maguire as a “leader” and urged the rest of Manchester United to match his commitment after the defender’s heroic performance in the FA Cup win against Arsenal.
Maguire, who played through illness, was “dead” by the end of the game, according to Amorim, and the coach says that’s the level of fight he wants to see from everyone.
“He was sick before the game,” Amorim said. “He was dead in the end – that’s what I want from every player.”
Maguire’s form has skyrocketed lately, and Amorim credits it to the defender’s newfound confidence. “I believe a lot in Harry,” he added. “He sees himself differently now. He’s playing like a leader again, and we need to give him credit.”

The boss believes Maguire thrives in United’s three-man defense but insists he’s just as effective in a back four. “He’s really good with the ball in the center. He feels important, and that’s key for us.”
Maguire is a doubt for Thursday’s clash against Southampton, while Diogo Dalot is suspended. Amorim also hinted at potential fitness issues for Garnacho, Antony, Amad Diallo, and Rashford.
On Garnacho, Amorim said the young winger is adapting to his system. “He’s improving and learning to play inside as a No. 10,” he explained. “He’s growing, but there’s more to come.”
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain. The forward hasn’t featured regularly since December, and Amorim dropped him for “training reasons.” With Rashford seeking a “new challenge,” a transfer could be on the cards.
When asked about Rashford’s situation, Amorim stayed focused: “I just want to win tomorrow. That’s all that matters.”
Southampton awaits, but the spotlight is firmly on Maguire and the level of fight Amorim demands from United’s squad.
