Amorim and Rashford

Manchester United ‘just have to survive’ following Wolves setback

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United must embrace survival mode to reverse their wretched run after a fourth loss in five Premier League matches placed them to 14th, eight points above the relegation zone.

After a crushing Boxing Day loss at Wolves, where Bruno Fernandes was sent off early in the second half for a second yellow card, United’s Portuguese manager cited a lack of time to educate his players.

Amorim is the first United manager since Walter Crickmer in January 1932 to lose five of his first 10 games in all competitions.

“I manage but I didn’t train [the players],” said Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag six weeks earlier. They need time to train and are changing their style of play, making it challenging for them and the personnel to pass on information. Lack of outcomes makes it tougher for people to trust.

“We just need to survive and win some time to work on the team. Already knew. Without time to train, I started this work with the squad, the new plan, and many challenging games. The voyage is long. We must battle these horrible times. We need time to work. To convince players, we must win games. If not, it’s hard.”

Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner for Wolves, similar to Son Heung-min’s goal in Tottenham’s 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final win last week. The crew was told to “manage” André Onana by upsetting him, according to Cunha.

Wolves head coach Vítor Pereira emphasized the importance of analyzing every match and preventing opponents from exploiting weaknesses. Pereira has maintained his 100% record since replacing Gary O’Neil. He [Cunha] is a high player, special player, who can make the difference in minor details.”

When asked if United could qualify for Europe, Amorim said, “We have to work on a lot of things in our club, inside the pitch, outside the pitch, so let’s focus on each game, each time. Every training minute must be used to better the team.”
