Real Madrid will pay Liverpool for Alexander-Arnold for Club World Cup

Real Madrid has approached Liverpool in an attempt to expedite the purchase of Trent Alexander-Arnold so that he can compete in the Club World Cup, which begins on June 14 in the United States.

The right-back is scheduled to join the Spanish side when his contract ends at the end of June, but Madrid is eager to sign him sooner.

Any arrangement would result in Liverpool receiving a fee. Fifa has adopted a two-window summer to help those competing in the Club World Cup, with the first running from June 1 to 10, and the second beginning on June 16.

Madrid’s first game is on June 18 versus Al-Hilal at the Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami.

Alexander-Arnold, who helped Liverpool win the Club World Cup in 2019, revealed on Monday that he would not renew his contract after two decades with the club, beginning in the academy at the age of six.

He has yet to confirm Madrid as his future destination, but is anticipated to sign a five-year contract.

“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season,” he added.

“This is easily the most difficult decision I’ve ever made in my life. I know many of you have questioned or been disappointed that I haven’t discussed this yet, but it was always my desire to keep my whole attention on the team’s best interests, which was to secure number 20,” alluding to the club’s 20th league championship.

Madrid’s desperation to speed up Alexander-Arnold’s arrival stems in part from their right-back issues. Dani Carvajal, the veteran defender, is out injured with cruciate ligament damage, so forward Lucas Vázquez has been filling in for his Spain teammate.
