The disputed penalty that prevented Newcastle from defeating Paris St-Germain in the Champions League was approved by a VAR, who has been suspended for his next match.
Tomasz Kwiatkowski has been notified by Uefa that he will not be in charge of the video refereeing during Wednesday’s Champions League Group D encounter between Real Sociedad and Red Bull Salzburg.
The decision states that the Polish referee will face disciplinary action for making the call that set up Kylian Mbappé’s equalizer in the eighth minute of extra time at the Parc des Princes.
Referee Kwiatowski is a very experienced official who officiated Tuesday night’s game as part of the same crew that handled the World Cup final the year before. He and Szymon Marciniak, the referee, get along well at work.
When the ball struck Tino Livramento’s arm, Newcastle was about to pull off a significant away victory. After bouncing off his chest and onto Livramento’s arm, the ball was first waived away by Marciniak.
Shortly after, the referee halted play and went to the VAR monitor to confer with Kwiatowski before issuing a spot-kick.
Newcastle’s boss, Eddie Howe, said, “I don’t think that was the right decision.” There are many things to think about at that point, starting with speed.
It was a ricochet that appears entirely different from the real occurrence when slowed down. The ball strikes his hand after first striking his chest and rising.
Even though he is running, his hand is still at his side in an organic stance. I think it was a bad choice, and it really aggravates us.
More outspoken remarks were made by analysts, like as Alan Shearer, a Newcastle great, who referred to the judgment as “disgusting.”
According to the version of events, Kwiatowski had argued on a more permissive application of the handball law.
Only in situations when they believe a “clear and obvious” error has been made—a situation that many spectators to the game did not feel applied—should VARs attempt to become involved in the referee’s decision-making. It seems that Uefa has the same viewpoint.
