Van Dijk said he’s in ‘ongoing’ talks about a new Liverpool contract

Virgil van Dijk says he is in “ongoing” talks about a new Liverpool deal but is unsure about his future.

Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah are Liverpool senior players whose contracts expire in the summer.

That has worried and frustrated supporters, especially since they don’t know what’s being done to keep them.

The captain’s encouraging update on his intention to stay at Anfield, albeit with some uncertainty, will provide fans with some relief.

“I can say discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know what happens in the future,” Van Dijk said. “My sole focus is on Liverpool and winning upcoming games.

I have no idea what the future holds. I can only say that the right individuals are having discussions, and I think the media will recognize when to make a decision.

But now all attention is on Liverpool and this season’s achievement. So we’ll see.”

Van Dijk said he was “feeling very good physically and mentally” and has performed well. The Netherlands defender has been in great form for Liverpool this season as they lead the Premier League under Arne Slot.

Curtis Jones

The head coach has won 10 of 11 games in all competitions, including Sunday’s 2-1 success over Chelsea at Anfield, when midfielder Curtis Jones was named man of the match after becoming a parent.

Van Dijk praised the academy graduate but advised the 23-year-old not to get carried away considering his injury-plagued start at Liverpool since his Jürgen Klopp debut in January 2019.

Van Dijk: “I think it’s been an amazing couple of weeks for him [Jones] on a personal level. Of course becoming a dad for the first time and being glad everything went well is most essential.

He was man of the match against Chelsea and scored the winner, which is crucial. Other than that, he was great defensively.

Unfortunately, injuries happen, and I think he realizes he needs to deliver when he plays. He must continue on the way. Keep moving without getting caught up in positivity.”

Liverpool are starting a tough schedule. After facing RB Leipzig in the Champions on Wednesday, they play championship rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

Games against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, and Manchester City follow.

“Listen, on paper, it looks like it is a very tough run of games and it is,” Van Dijk said. Traveling makes it hard to stay healthy and in rhythm, but I’m looking forward to it.

You want to play at the top level and demonstrate our abilities. So go for it.”
