Erik ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager will be decided at an executive meeting chaired by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in London on Tuesday, with his assistant, Ruud van Nistelrooy, being considered as a caretaker successor if a change is made.
Ratcliffe, who oversees the football department, is likely to attend the meeting, which will also feature Omar Berrada, the CEO, Dan Ashworth, the Sporting Director, and Jason Wilcox, the Technical Director.
While there was no indication internally at the club on Monday that Ten Hag would be fired, the Guardian believes that if the decision is made, Van Nistelrooy might serve as a caretaker until a permanent replacement can be found.
If the former United forward impresses, he may be regarded as Ten Hag’s permanent replacement.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as caretaker manager of Manchester United in December 2018 after Jose Mourinho was fired.
Due to the team’s remarkable performance under the Norwegian, he was appointed permanently on a three-year contract the following March.
Van Nistelrooy, who took over as Ten Hag’s assistant in July, managed PSV Eindhoven for all but one match of the 2022-23 season, winning the KNVB Cup.
In the summer, Wilcox interviewed Thomas Tuchel in Monaco about perhaps replacing Ten Hag. According to reports, United’s football executive has not formally addressed the German about doing so if Ten Hag is gone immediately.
When asked last week about Ten Hag’s future, Ratcliffe said he would leave the issue to the executive.
“I don’t want to answer that question,” replied the billionaire, who owns 27.7% of United. “I like Erik and think he’s a great coach, but at the end of the day, it’s not my decision.
The management team that runs Manchester United must decide how to best run the team in a variety of ways.
However, Manchester United’s current management team has only been in place since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March, or April, Omar and Dan came only in July.
Other probable permanent successors to Ten Hag include Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
Meanwhile, United players Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and Noussair Mazraoui have withdrawn from their impending international matches for Argentina, England, and Morocco, respectively, the club announced on Monday. United stated that Mainoo has been “managing an issue” in recent games.
