Jürgen Klopp

As Red Bull’s “head of global soccer,” Jurgen Klopp returns to football

After being named Red Bull’s worldwide soccer boss, former Liverpool and Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp is back.

“After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this,” stated Klopp, who starts on January 1, 2025.

The role may have changed, but my enthusiasm for football and the people who make it great has not.

German media report that his arrangement with the drinks manufacturer-funded multi-club organization allows him to apply for the German national-team post after Julian Nagelsmann resigns.

Before Euro 2024, Nagelsmann extended his contract and is likely to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup.

Klopp left Liverpool at the end of 2023-24 after almost eight years. He has been active on social media and supported his close friend New Zealand badminton star Wojtek Czyz at the Paris Paralympics.

He will perform a similar role at Red Bull as Michael Edwards, who worked with Klopp as Liverpool’s sporting director. Liverpool’s FSG owners plan to acquire multiple clubs.

Red Bull stated that “He will not be involved in day-to-day operations but will oversee a group of clubs that bring the kind of intensity that became his own calling card as a coach.”

He will be announced at a press conference in mid-January 2025 and start on New Year’s Day.

After a friendly match between Liverpool and RB Salzburg in July 2022, Klopp lauded Red Bull, stating, “What Red Bull is doing is really interesting project.”

They change every year and sell players, but they’re good. Their work is fascinating. The football concept is similar to ours.

Red Bull owns RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, New York Red Bulls in MLS, Leeds United, a minority stake in and jersey sponsorship for Leeds United, and many other sports teams, including their seven-time Formula One winners.

Klopp and Red Bull founder Ralf Rangnick, who later managed Manchester United, had a high-pressing style.

Following his time as Salzburg and Leipzig sports director, the Austria coach became Red Bull head of sport and development. Klopp considers him a friend and mentor.

Klopp stated that this will be a change in pace for his career: “I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs but ultimately I am one part of an organisation that is unique, innovative and forward looking.”

Klopp spent seven years at Mainz, seven at Borussia Dortmund, and seven at Liverpool, where he won the Champions League and Premier League.

According to Red Bull, “He will not be involved in the clubs’ day-to-day operations, but will provide strategic vision, supporting individual sporting directors in advancing the Red Bull philosophy.”

Salzburg is coached by Pepijn Ljinders, Klopp’s assistant from 2018 until 2024.

Two hefty Champions League group stage losses and a 5-0 weekend loss to Sturm Graz have started their season poorly.
