Aaron Briggs has left Liverpool after the club’s continued struggles with set-pieces this season. The decision comes after concerns from head coach Arne Slot, who admitted that poor defending and lack of goals from set-pieces have been holding the team back.
Liverpool have conceded 12 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League so far nearly half of all the goals they have allowed. At the same time, they have scored only three goals from set-pieces, one of the worst records in the league. Their latest setback came in the 2 – 1 win over Wolves, where they again conceded from a dead-ball situation.
Briggs, who previously worked as an analyst at Manchester City, joined Liverpool’s coaching staff in July 2024 and became set-piece coach two months later. Despite being well-regarded internally and having contributed to last season’s title win, the club felt change was necessary. Both parties agreed to part ways.
Liverpool have stressed that Briggs’ exit is not a complete solution to their set piece problems. For now, his duties will be shared by Slot and his assistants, Sipke Hulshoff and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, while the club looks for a long-term replacement.
Slot has acknowledged that fixing set-pieces will require a team wide effort, adding that without these issues, Liverpool could be several points higher in the league table.
